Smooth Hydrangea

Smooth Hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea arborescens, is known for its captivating globes of blooms, luscious green foliage, and large, rounded flower heads. Native to the eastern United States, this deciduous shrub blooms on new wood; it produces flowers on the current season’s growth, unlike its counterparts in the Hydrangeaceae family.

Smooth Hydrangea typically grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet with a similar spread, forming a rounded and mounded shape. Its lush, green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the spectacular flower clusters, creating a well-balanced and aesthetically pleasing shrub. In South Carolina, this variety is our Native Hydrangea.

Growing and Caring For Smooth Hydrangea

Smooth Hydrangea prefers well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. While it can tolerate a range of soil types, ensuring good drainage helps prevent issues like root rot. Amending the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting enhances fertility and moisture retention, creating an optimal environment for healthy growth. Regular watering is crucial for Smooth Hydrangea, especially during dry spells. Adequate moisture promotes vigorous growth and supports the development of large, showy flower heads. Mulching around the base of the plant helps retain soil moisture, regulates temperature, and suppresses weeds.

This hydrangea species performs well in partial shade to full shade. While it can withstand periods of sunlight, providing some shade, especially in the afternoon, can help protect the foliage from scorching, ensuring the plant remains lush and vibrant.

Pruning is typically done in late winter to early spring. Gardeners often cut back the stems to a few inches above the ground to rejuvenate the shrub and encourage robust new growth. This approach ensures the plant’s resilience and promotes prolific blooming on new wood, allowing gardeners to enjoy abundant flowers even after harsh winter conditions.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of Smooth Hydrangea are broadly ovate, serrated, and possess a deep green color. These leaves serve as an excellent complement to the showy blossoms, creating a harmonious visual effect. The true star of Smooth Hydrangea, however, is its remarkable flowers. The blooms are large, spherical clusters that can reach 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Initially, the flowers emerge in a creamy white hue, gradually transitioning to shades of pink and green as they age, providing an evolving display of colors throughout the blooming season.

Uses in the Garden

Smooth Hydrangea finds many uses in garden landscapes, contributing to the overall beauty and design. Its compact size makes it suitable for various settings, from foundation plantings to mixed borders. Planted en masse, Smooth Hydrangea creates a stunning visual impact, especially when the large flower heads bloom. Its adaptability to different light conditions allows it to thrive in woodland gardens or dappled shade areas, bringing a touch of elegance to shaded corners. Additionally, its blooms make excellent cut flowers, adding a touch of natural beauty to indoor arrangements.
