Wax Leaf Begonia

Wax Leaf Begonia is an annual plant known for its attractive foliage and bright, showy flowers. It is native to tropical regions of South America. The plant is called “wax leaf” due to its shiny, waxy leaves that come in green, red, and bronze. Wax Leaf Begonias are known for their versatility and ease of care, making them an ideal plant for beginner gardeners.

Our Selection of Wax Leaf Begonias

At Martin Garden Center, we grow only the specialty Doublet Pink and Doublet Red in 4″ containers. We also purchase the same from our vendors. Other wax leaf begonias, such as those found in flats, are readily available via our vendors. Flat varieties include both green and bronze leaf such as the Cocktail series, Olympic series and the Pazzaz series. Flats come in circa April 1st and we attempt to keep them stocked at 70+ flats of various varieties through mid-May, when we begin to taper. By July, any leftover Wax Leaf Begonias are potted up to 4″ & 6″ containers.

Caring for Wax Leaf Begonia

These begonias thrive in partial to full shade, making them well-suited for areas with limited direct sunlight. Plant them in well-draining soil enriched with organic matter to ensure optimal growth. When it comes to caring for Wax Leaf Begonia, consistent moisture is crucial. Water the plants at the base to keep the leaves dry and reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plants can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Wax Leaf Begonias are relatively pest-resistant, but it’s still essential to monitor for any signs of pests, such as aphids or mealybugs, and address them promptly if detected. Regular deadheading of faded flowers will encourage continuous blooming and keep the plants looking tidy. Additionally, Wax Leaf Begonias respond well to occasional feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. As the plants grow, they may benefit from periodic pinching to encourage bushier growth and prevent legginess.

Leaves And Flowers

The plant produces clusters of small, bright flowers in shades of pink, white, red, and orange. The flowers can bloom for several weeks, providing a continuous display of color in the garden or container. The plant’s shiny, waxy leaves provide a beautiful contrast to the bright, showy flowers. The foliage adds texture and interest to any planting.

Uses in the Garden

Wax Leaf Begonia is quite versatile and can be used in many different ways in the garden or at home. They are commonly grown as houseplants but can also grown in outdoor beds and containers. They work well as borders or groundcovers, and their compact size makes them an excellent choice for small gardens or balconies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to Plant With Wax Leaf Begonias

Wax leaf begonias pair well with plants that share their preference for partial shade and well-drained soil. For a colorful contrast, plant them alongside coleus, which offers vibrant foliage in shades of red, purple, and green. Sweet alyssum makes a great companion, providing a low-growing carpet of tiny flowers that complement begonias’ blooms. If you want height variation, combine them with impatiens or ferns, which thrive in similar conditions. For a bold, tropical look, mix them with caladiums, whose large, colorful leaves create an eye-catching display.

Is Wax Leaf Begonia an Annual or Perennial?

Wax leaf begonias (Begonia semperflorens) are typically grown as annuals in most climates. They thrive in warm weather but cannot survive frost, making them a seasonal plant in cooler regions. However, in USDA zones 10-11, they can be grown as perennials since they don’t experience freezing temperatures. Many gardeners treat them as annuals, replanting each spring for continuous blooms. If brought indoors during winter, they can sometimes survive and be replanted outdoors in the spring.
